Word Formation process: Clipping


     WHAT'S CLIPPING 💁???                            

This is a word formation process that reduces or shortens a word without changing the exact meaning, in contrast to the back- formation process. It reserves the original meaning. 

 Clipping is divided into four types  


 1. Back Clipping                                                    
Removes the end of a word

 Examples : Ad -advertisement
                    Photo -photograph 


 2.Fore clipping                                                      
 Removes the begging part of a word 

 Examples :Phone- telephone 📞 
                   Hamburger🍔- burger


 3.middle clipping                                                 
Reserves the middle position

 Examples :Flu😷- influenza 
                   Fridge- refrigerator

 
 4.Complex clipping                                              
Removes multiple words 

 Examples: Ad-Advantage

What do we mean by Abbreviation as word formation process Abbreviation is another commonly used word formation used to shorten a word or phrase.   With the presence of the internet making the social media a part of our lives, the importance of the language of the internet cannot be overemphasized as it has drastically increased our words through different word formation processes. Most of the users of the ocial media platforms like E-mails, Whatsapp, Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, Twitter, Imo, Snapchat, 2go, etc. use  abreviations to pass their messages via chatting and short messages. Text messages and Twitter have limited number of characters that can be used.
