Word Formation process: Clipping


     WHAT'S CLIPPING 💁???                            

This is a word formation process that reduces or shortens a word without changing the exact meaning, in contrast to the back- formation process. It reserves the original meaning. 

 Clipping is divided into four types  


 1. Back Clipping                                                    
Removes the end of a word

 Examples : Ad -advertisement
                    Photo -photograph 


 2.Fore clipping                                                      
 Removes the begging part of a word 

 Examples :Phone- telephone 📞 
                   Hamburger🍔- burger


 3.middle clipping                                                 
Reserves the middle position

 Examples :Flu😷- influenza 
                   Fridge- refrigerator

 
 4.Complex clipping                                              
Removes multiple words 

 Examples: Ad-Advantage

What are morphemes???? Morphemes  are  the  smallest meaningful unit of grammar with meaning and cannot be broken down into smaller units. Because morphemes make up all words in the  English language , learning morphemes unlocks the structure and meaning within words.
